Saddam Hussein was born on 28 April, 1937. Saddam Hussein was born in the village OF Al-Awja, Iraq. From his early youth, Saddam lived with his maternal uncle. By 1956, Saddam Hussein had joined the Baath Party. In 1958 Saddam Hussein marries Sajida. He spends six months in prison arrested for killing his brother-in-law. During 1959, Saddam was part of a Baath assassination team which had attempted to assassinate Prime Minister Gen. Abdel-Karim Kassem. Saddam was shot in the leg and was forced to escape to Syria. In 1963, Saddam Hussein returned to Iraq after the Ramadan Revolution. He was later arrested and remained in prison until his escape in 1967. In 1968, Saddam Hussein participated in a coup in which the Baathists overthrew the Iraqi government. Saddam Hussein was placed in charge of internal security. Saddam was elected the Vice-chairman of the Revolution Command Council in 1969. Then in 1979, Saddam Hussein was elected President of Iraq. In 1984, Saddam Hussein awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Law from the University of Baghdad. In 1990, after a dispute about oil, Saddam Hussein ordered an invasion of Kuwait. Saddam repressed movements he deemed threatening to the stability of his rule, particularly those of ethnic or religious groups that sought independence or autonomy, such as Iraq's Shi'a Muslim, Kurdish and Iraqi Turkmen populations.Saddam's government collapsed as a result of the 2003 invasion of Iraq by an international coalition led by the United States, and he was captured by American forces on December 13, 2003. On November 5, 2006, he was convicted of crimes against humanity by the Iraq Special Tribunal and was sentenced to death by hanging.[6]On December 26, 2006, Saddam's appeal was rejected and the death sentence upheld.
